Backyard tortoise?

i've been researching the desert tortoise and i found out that our state adopts out these guys to live in people's backyards. not only did i find that out but i also learned that in most cases they can live with dogs and my backyard is ideal for one because its cement reinforced. i really want to look into adopting one of these guys. what are some things i should consider?
